Format

Tournament rules and format are as follows:

Format: Eight player single round robin.

Participants: Selection for event is as follows: three highest rated players that accept invitations (based on April supplement), three from Candidates Tournament, and last year's winner. Additionally, the top finisher in the SuperStates K-12 Championship (SoCal resident) is seeded into the event. In the event the top SuperStates player declines, then seeding is by top four rated players who accept, three from Candidates, and last year's winner.

Qualifying for Candidates Tournament: Appropriate result in any of selected tournaments (qualifiers will be posted in next Rank and File and on the SCCF website here), and players over 2200 and 2000 may participate, if not otherwise qualified, for a $50 and $99 entry, respectively. Players invited from State Championship Qualifiers are exempt from entry fees. Candidates Tournament will be at the Star Prep Center in Los Angeles on June 11 and 12.

Time Control: 40/90 with 30 sec increment, 30 min sudden death

Tiebreak playoff: Two 3 minute + 2 second increment blitz games, then one 5 minute (White) / 3 minute (Black) + 2 second increment Armageddon game.

Ratings: The tournament will be USCF-rated but not FIDE-rated.

Prize schedule:

$$5,000 guaranteed prizes, and any ensuing sponsorship will also go to prize fund.

Below are results from the Candidates Tournament held June 11 and 12 at Star Prep Center in Los Angeles. The TD was Dylan Quercia. The tournament qualified Joshua Sheng, Ildar Salakhutdinov and Craig Clawitter who will join the four seeded players in the finals at Temecula, CA, July 7-10.
